Old Dubai, Souks & Abras
The half of Dubai the skyline hides: the wind-tower lanes of Al Fahidi, the spice and gold souks of Deira, and a one-dirham abra crossing of the Creek.

Most of what people picture as Dubai is thirty years old. This walk is the other half: the wind-tower houses and courtyard cafés of Al Fahidi, the spice and gold souks across the water in Deira, and the abra — the small wooden ferry that still crosses Dubai Creek for one dirham.

Before you book
How much is the abra?
One dirham per person each way on the traditional Creek abras, paid in cash to the driver. It is still the best value in the city.
Is it very hot to walk?
Between November and March it is pleasant. From June to September we start early or move the walk to the evening — the souks are open and the heat is bearable after dark.
Can we buy gold safely here?
Yes. Gold in the Deira souk is regulated and priced by weight against the daily rate, with the making charge negotiable. Your guide will explain how the pricing works before you shop.
